US Entry Playbook
TikTok Shop for international brands: the US entry playbook

30 minute strategy call. We are a California based TikTok Shop Partner.
TikTok Shop has become the fastest door into the US market for international brands, because it is the one major US channel where distribution runs on creator content instead of track record. Retail buyers want velocity history. Amazon wants reviews and ad budgets. A DTC site wants an audience you have not built yet. TikTok Shop wants a product that demos well and creators posting about it, which an unknown foreign brand can supply from week 1. We are a California based TikTok Shop Partner agency, and brands from Australia, Canada, Europe, and Asia now come to us with the same sentence: we want to enter the US, and we think TikTok Shop is the way in. They are usually right. This is the honest playbook, including the parts that are harder than the platform makes them look.
Why TikTok Shop is the cheapest US door
- Discovery does not check your passport. The feed shows your product to US buyers because the video is good, not because your brand is known. A strong demo from an unknown brand beats a weak one from a famous brand.
- Creators are rented distribution. Instead of building an audience for 2 years, you activate affiliate creators who already have one and pay commission only on sales. The mechanics are in our affiliate recruiting guide.
- Proof compounds into other channels. TikTok Shop sales create US search demand for your brand name, which lifts Amazon and your own site. That halo effect is documented in our TikTok Shop versus Amazon comparison and, for brands already on Amazon, the Amazon sellers playbook.
The eligibility reality (high level, verify the current rules)
This is the part that filters out the unserious. TikTok Shop US requires a legal path into the US market, and the rules change often enough that anything specific we print here could be stale in a quarter. The 2 broad doors, as of 2026:
- A US entity of your own, with US banking and tax registration, selling as a domestic seller. The most control, the most setup.
- Approved cross-border and partner programs, which TikTok has expanded for sellers from certain countries and categories. Availability depends on where you are incorporated and what you sell.
This is not legal advice, and the right structure depends on your country, category, and volume; a cross-border accountant earns their fee here. What we can tell you from operating shops: whichever door you take, US fulfillment is not optional. Shipping from abroad produces 2 week delivery times, and slow delivery quietly throttles your shop's visibility before you ever find out why. Position inventory with a US 3PL before launch.
The launch sequence that works
- 1. Solve the boring stack first. Entity or program access, US 3PL with inventory landed, category-compliant labeling, and margin math done. The channel takes roughly 30 percent in platform fees and creator commission before product cost; our fees breakdown has the full stack. If the margin does not survive that math, fix pricing before entering, not after.
- 2. Lead with one hero SKU. Not your catalog. One product that demos in 15 seconds at an impulse price point, with inventory depth behind it.
- 3. Recruit creators before you need them. Start outreach while inventory is on the water. By the time the shop opens, you want samples moving and first videos scheduled, so the shop launches with content instead of waiting for it.
- 4. Run the community, not a blast list. The difference between creators who post once and creators who sell weekly is the operating system around them: briefs, coaching, and daily contact. We published the full system in how to build a creator community that sells.
- 5. Amplify winners with ads, then measure the halo. GMV Max on proven videos, and watch your US brand searches and Amazon page views climb alongside shop sales. That lift is the real prize of US entry: TikTok Shop is the beachhead, not the whole invasion.
The mistakes that sink foreign launches
- Shipping from home. The most common and most fatal. Slow delivery wrecks shop health metrics, and shop health caps reach.
- Porting home-market pricing. US channel economics need their own margin model, built before launch.
- Treating the US as one audience. The creator roster has to cover the segments your product serves; one accent of content finds one slice of the market.
- Launching the catalog. Ten products at launch splits your content, your samples, and the algorithm's attention ten ways.
- Doing it without daily hands. A US launch run from another timezone with nobody working the shop daily is how momentum dies in week 3. Someone has to own it in US hours, in house or hired.
Across the 60+ brands and $20M+ in GMV behind our published results, the international entries that worked all shared the same shape: boring stack solved early, one hero SKU, creators recruited before launch, and daily operation from day 1.
Quick answers
Can international brands sell on TikTok Shop in the US?
Yes, through 2 main doors: setting up a US entity with US fulfillment, or entering through TikTok's approved cross-border and partner programs where available. Requirements change often and differ by country and category, so verify the current rules before committing to a structure. What does not change: you need US-speed fulfillment, because shipping from abroad produces delivery times that throttle your shop's visibility.
What does a foreign brand need before launching on TikTok Shop US?
Four things at a high level: a legal path into the US market (own entity or an approved program), inventory positioned with a US 3PL so orders ship in days not weeks, US-compliant product labeling for your category, and margin room for the channel economics of roughly 30 percent to platform fees and creator commission. Brands that solve fulfillment first have the smoothest launches, because shop health metrics depend on delivery speed from day 1.
How long does it take an international brand to get selling on TikTok Shop?
With the paperwork path chosen and inventory in a US warehouse, the shop side moves fast: setup, listings, and creator outreach can produce first sales within weeks. The long pole is almost always upstream: entity setup, banking, and shipping inventory into the US. Brands that start creator recruiting while inventory is on the water compress the timeline hardest.
Why do international brands enter the US through TikTok Shop first?
Because it is the only US channel where distribution does not care that nobody knows you. Retail wants a track record, Amazon wants review history and ad budgets, and DTC wants an audience you do not have yet. TikTok Shop runs on creator videos and the discovery feed, so an unknown brand with a strong product and a real creator program competes on content, not history. The sales and search demand it generates then lift Amazon and DTC as you build them.
