How much does it cost to sell on TikTok Shop?

30 minute strategy call. $20M+ GMV of margin math behind the advice.
Selling on TikTok Shop costs little to start and roughly 30 percent of each order to run: a referral fee of about 6 to 8 percent, payment processing around 2 to 3 percent, creator commission of 15 to 20 percent on affiliate sales, plus samples, performance bonuses, and eventually ad spend. There is no monthly subscription for a standard shop, which is why the platform looks cheap from the outside and surprises brands from the inside. Across the 60+ brands and $20M+ in GMV we have run, the sellers who win are the ones who did this math before their first sample shipped. This guide walks the full stack: what TikTok takes, what growth actually costs, what a launch budget looks like, and the margin you need for the whole thing to compound.
The cost stack, layer by layer
- Referral fee: roughly 6 to 8 percent of each order depending on category. This is TikTok's cut for the transaction.
- Payment processing: about 2 to 3 percent. Standard card economics, taken at checkout.
- Creator commission: 15 to 20 percent on affiliate-driven sales, and this is a choice, not a tax. Set it low and quality creators promote someone else's product; our fees and commission guide covers exactly where to set it.
- Performance bonuses: about 10 percent of creator-driven GMV, paid to keep proven sellers motivated and posting.
- Samples: a real budget line. Product plus shipping to every creator you activate. Targeted seeding is the cheapest acquisition spend you will make; untargeted seeding is product in the trash.
- Ads: optional at launch, powerful later. GMV Max amplifies videos that already convert. Budget for it once winners exist, not before.
What one order actually pays out
The worked example from our fees guide, on a product at the $30 sweet spot: the platform referral fee takes $2.40, processing takes $0.75, and a 20 percent creator commission takes $6.00. About $9.15 gone, roughly 30 percent, before your product cost. A $9 landed cost leaves around $11.85 per order to cover samples, bonuses, ads, and profit. That is a healthy business at 65 percent gross margin and a doomed one at 40 percent, which is the entire reason we push margin math before launch. Run your own product through the readiness scorecard before committing inventory.
The launch budget nobody itemizes
For a brand with inventory ready, the startup costs are lighter than most channels but real:
- Shop setup: minimal. Registration, listings, and catalog work cost time more than money.
- The opening sample wave: commonly a few hundred to a few thousand dollars depending on product cost and how many creators you activate in month 1. This is the acquisition budget of the launch.
- Content: variable. Affiliate creators produce for commission and samples; any produced content you commission on top is your call, and it works best after creators reveal what converts.
- The operating cost: the honest one. Daily outreach, briefs, coaching, and shop health is a real job. You pay it in founder hours, an employee, or an agency fee; the market rates for that third option are in our agency pricing guide.
Where brands actually lose money
- Thin margin products. The stack forgives nothing under 50 percent gross margin.
- Cheap commission. Saving 5 points of commission and losing every creator worth having is the most expensive discount on the platform.
- Untracked samples. If nobody measures the sample-to-post rate, seeding quietly becomes charity.
- Ads before proof. Paid spend on unproven creative burns the budget that creators would have converted.
- Ignoring the halo. TikTok Shop demand lifts Amazon and your own site, so judging the channel on shop GMV alone undercounts what the spend buys. The mechanics are in our TikTok Shop versus Amazon breakdown.
Quick answers
How much does it cost to sell on TikTok Shop?
Listing is inexpensive; selling costs about 30 percent of each order. There is no monthly platform subscription for a standard shop: TikTok takes a referral fee of roughly 6 to 8 percent plus payment processing around 2 to 3 percent. The real costs are the growth engine: creator commission of 15 to 20 percent on affiliate sales, performance bonuses of about 10 percent of creator driven GMV, product samples, and ad spend once you amplify winners. Plan for roughly 30 percent of revenue going to the channel before product cost and ads.
Is TikTok Shop cheaper than selling on Amazon?
The platform take is comparable once you count everything, but the money buys different things. Amazon fees buy shelf placement in a search engine where you also pay ads to be seen. TikTok Shop costs are mostly creator commission, which is pay-on-results customer acquisition: the commission only exists because a video already produced a sale. For unknown brands, that difference usually makes TikTok Shop the cheaper way to create demand, and the two channels compound when run together.
What margin do you need to sell profitably on TikTok Shop?
Aim for 65 percent or better gross margin after product cost, and treat 50 percent as the hard floor. Fees, commission, bonuses, samples, and eventual ad spend stack on top of your cost of goods, so a product with 40 percent margin runs out of room before the engine compounds. Products priced 15 to 50 dollars with healthy margin have the space to pay creators properly and still profit.
What are the startup costs for a brand launching on TikTok Shop?
For a brand with existing inventory: shop setup itself costs little, then budget for an opening wave of samples to creators, often a few hundred to a few thousand dollars depending on product cost and how many creators you activate, plus any content production and the time or team to run daily operations. Ads are optional at launch and work best after creator videos prove what converts. The biggest startup cost is honestly operational: someone has to run outreach, briefs, and shop health every day.
